The advent of casino gambling in 1978 changed the face of Atlantic City, but not its spirit. Using the bigger-than-life promotional techniques always favored in Atlantic City, the casino industry has successfully attracted the huge urban and suburban populations which are within an easy commute of the resort. In the health-conscious nineties, if the sea and salt air no longer provide the visitor with sufficient rejuvenation, they can be supplemented with the racquet ball courts, health club facilities, and pools available within the casino complexes. Casino hotels rise along the Boardwalk like the sand castles of old. Indeed, several of the earlier hotels have been incorporated into these new glass and steel structures which define Atlantic City's skyline today. In the area of entertainment, the casino industry has assiduously nurtured Atlantic City's greatest tradition - making the resort a truly exciting venue for the finest entertainers America has to offer. And, although the souvenir shops are now more likely to be found off the Boardwalk within a casino complex, the souvenirs themselves are hauntingly familiar, and still have the power to rekindle some cherished memory of Atlantic City, the "Playground of the Nation."
